Getting Ready - Fishing Tips for Kids

Meet Cora

Hi friends! I’m Cora. I love fishing so much that I am always studying how to be the best fisher kid. I want to help you be the best fisher kid too.

In this post I share some tips for getting ready to go fish!

Pack the right fishing gear!

What you pack for fishing depends on where you are going. For example:if you are going river fishing and you want to wade, you should pack your waders! Comfortable shoes and quick dry clothes are a great place to start if you do not own waders.

The most important thing to always pack for fishing? Sunglasses! Especially sunglasses with polarized lenses so you can see the fish. The lenses help block sun glare on the water and pop those beautiful fish right to your eyes.

Pick your rod and line

Fly fishing rods are discussed in strength and size. The strength is in weight, wt, or w. Knowing the landscape, and potential size of fish helps pick a rod. Will it be a wide open lake with really big fish? A 6wt 9ft6in rod is great!

Is it a tight stream with lots of vegetation and really small trout? Then 3wt 6ft 6in will be so much fun!

The weight of the rod usually has to do with the line to put on your reel. So if you picked the 6wt rod, put on 6-weight line!

Remember your environment

Don’t forget you are entering fish habitat. Fish are not used to us kids stomping around, laughing, and looking at them! Keep your voice down, your stomping far from the banks, and if you have any trash pack it out!

Oh! If you bring your dog, please leash where you fish. I love dogs, but they are really good at scaring fish!

Thanks friends for listening to these tips! I hope they help you on your next kid fishing adventure. The more I learn, the more I share, so I look forward to the next blog post about fishing tips for kids!
