Brown Trout Facts For Kids
Let’s Find Brown Trout!
Do you want to catch a big mean brown trout with me? Great! Good news, this fish is so popular with anglers that it is pretty much everywhere. I mean it! The brown trout is on every major continent besides Antarctica, and in almost every single US state.
Brown trout are in streams, rivers, lakes, and the ocean! Of course, this is all dependent on when they are spawning (releasing eggs), so we will need to know what time of year we are fishing.
How Brown Trout Behave in Water
Brown trout spawn in late fall, and only every 3-4 years. When they spawn they swim into the smallest parts of the river and find a gravel bottom. But remember, we don’t want to fish them when they’re spawning! That is not very nice.
If not spawning, bigger brown trout like to hide beneath the edges of the river or stream. Some will sit at the bottom of the river during the day and come up when the sun sets. We will want small bug flies for fishing smaller Brown Trout, and then fish-looking “streamers” if we want to catch a big fish!
If it is spring time, when other trout spawn, we can also try tying on an egg, since Brown Trout like to eat other fish’s eggs. During this time, brown trout are very aggressive. That’s why our sticker looks angry!
History of Brown Trout
Brown Trout are not native to the USA. They came here in 1883 from Germany and then Scotland. A year later in 1884, they were put into the Baldwin River which is in Michigan. The way Brown Trout behave make them very popular with anglers. Also, their aggressive nature allows them to takeover a river easily. Both of these factors are a big part of why Brown Trout are now all over the world. (History courtesy of Orvis).
