The Colors of Rainbow Trout
Rainbow trout are soooo pretty! They have a silver body with a big pink stripe along their belly. Sometimes rainbow trout have a blue or green stripe next to the pink one. This makes the fish look like a rainbow! Also, this fish shimmers like sparkly tissue paper.
Rainbow trout also have small dark spots along their back, and sometimes pinkish orange cheeks. Lastly, on some rainbow trout there is a white stripe on the ventral fin. Just like a brook trout.

Want to see the sparkle? I sure do. Rainbow trout can be found in all water types. They are very hardy and live in rivers, lakes, and even the ocean! They prefer cold, clear water with rocks and pools. Rainbow trout swim around the stream a lot, so these pools provide many feeding options. Rainbow trout are found on every continent except Antarctica, and almost every United State!

How Rainbow Trout Behave in Water
Rainbow trout like fast moving water. Look for ripples below a hole or after some rocks. There might be some rainbows eating!
Try a dry fly!
Rainbow trout are fun to catch on a dry fly. A dry fly is a fly that sits on the surface of the water verses sinking. If you watch a pool with rainbow trout look to see if they come to the surface to eat. If yes, throw on a dry fly! If not, that’s ok. Rainbow trout will also eat flies that sink. Flip some rocks to see what bugs are on the rock.
I would skip a streamer fly if you want to catch a rainbow trout! Rainbow trout are not known to eat other fish. Streamers are flies that look like other fish or pieces of a fish.

History of Rainbow Trout
The first discovery of the shimmery rainbow trout was in Kamchatka! Do you know where Kamchatka is? Kamchatka is a very remote peninsula on the Eastern coast of Russia. It is known to be one of the wildest places on Earth! (It was also where Hopper is held captive in Stranger Things Season 4).
Rainbow trout are also native to the West Pacific coast of North America. Their native habitat stretches all the way from Alaska to Mexico! They took their first journey across the United States to New York in 1875 as eggs, and now live all over the East coast as well.
